Dorothea E. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing

NURS306-Theoretical Foundation of Professional Nursing Practice

Purpose of Assignment

The Purpose: This assignment is designed to allow the student an opportunity to complete an in-depth analysis of a nursing theory/model. Analysis of the theory coupled with application to a clinical scenario is intended to demonstrate the relevance of nursing theories to professional practice.

Student Approach to Assignment

I approached this assignment by choosing to research and apply Dorothea E. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing to my nursing practice. The self-care deficit happens when a person is unable to tolerate self-care. This is relevant to when a nurse should step in. Often times, it is easy for nurses to complete tasks for their patients, but this model helps the nurse help the patient, without completely taking over. Additionally, this model helps the nurse advocate for the patient. I approached this assignment by exploring and providing examples of when Orem’s SCDNT model is appropriate and beneficial for the patient and the nurse.

Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio

This assignment was included in my portfolio to exemplify the importance of nurses as supporting caregivers that advocate and promote autonomy and health. As a nurse, this assignment represents my understanding as my role in individual patient care. This assignment helped me learn the importance of each patient as an individual and providing customized care to achieve the best patient outcomes.
